Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park to host biggest stress test yet on Friday

About 63,000 people are expected to take part in drill aimed to assess the sports park’s capacity

Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park will conduct its largest test exercise yet on Friday, with about 63,000 participants joining drills at three venues as authorities assess the site at close to full capacity.

Officials also said on Wednesday they would review entry and exit arrangements, as well as transport conditions. The test exercise will also simulate various scenarios, including emergencies.

Joe Chow Yat-ming, deputy police commissioner for operations and the exercise director of an interdepartmental task group, said the drill would involve Kai Tak Stadium, Kai Tak Arena and Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground.

“The main purpose of the drill is to assess the capacity of the sports park and the nearby facilities including public transport and the site’s Central Square when hosting events with maximum attendance,” he said.

“According to this exercise’s nature and scale, as well as the potential crowd and traffic situation, our task group has also designed various incident scenarios.

“Drawing from past experiences, we aim to identify potential risk points to enhance safety levels and draft different contingency plans.”
