The Hong Kong flag carrier’s flight CX811 left Boston Logan International Airport at 2.23am local time, according to tracking website Flightradar24.

Shortly after take-off, the Airbus A350 aircraft began circling above Massachusetts Bay. In such a manoeuvre, a plane may be dumping fuel before making an emergency landing.

Cathay Pacific said on Monday the flight had returned in accordance with standard procedures following the report of smoke in the cockpit and cabin.

“The aircraft landed normally at 3.31am local time and returned to the gate where our engineers are now investigating and performing inspections. No injuries among our customers or crew were reported,” a Cathay spokesman said.
