The Li Ka Shing Foundation is giving 4,200 domestic helpers in Hong Kong a free trip to the Disneyland Resort to thank them for their contributions to local families, prompting a flurry of requests for tickets.

The workers each received a one-day ticket, a transport allowance of HK$80 (US$10) on their Octopus cards and meals valued at HK$365. The initiative will cost the foundation HK$1.86 million, excluding the price of the tickets.

A one-day ticket costs HK$669, according to the Disneyland website, putting their combined value at about HK$2.8 million. The theme park and the foundation cooperated on the project.

A first group of domestic helpers visited Disneyland on Lantau Island on Sunday and another will do so on January 26 as part of the effort by the charity organisation founded by tycoon Li Ka-shing.

The foundation said the initiative aimed to “create unforgettable happy memories for those domestic workers who are working hard in Hong Kong and far away from home”.

The number of helpers benefiting is up by 5 per cent this year from the 4,000 in 2024.

News of the initiative prompted more than 700 comments from helpers within three hours on a social media page run by the Post, mostly asking how to obtain the free tickets.
