A major charitable organisation in Hong Kong has said it is strengthening its support for youth development and small charities in response to the latest needs of society.
The Shaw Foundation, set up by late entertainment magnate Run Run Shaw, said its approach could generate synergy with Operation Santa Claus (OSC), to which it is contributing for the second year in a row.
OSC is an annual fundraising initiative by the South China Morning Post and public broadcaster RTHK. It supports local charities in creating social impact, with a particular emphasis on assisting smaller organisations.
This year’s OSC campaign benefits 11 projects including those supporting the development of children and youth through various methods, such as STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) education.
The foundation has a special take on this year’s OSC tagline, #EveryoneCanBeASantaClaus.

Raymond Chan Wai-man, chairman of the foundation, said: “Mr Shaw thought that teaching people how to fish is better than giving them fish.
“The best way to be a Santa Claus is to empower others to fight for development opportunities for themselves. Then, they can each be a Santa Claus and help more people.
“Talent is the cornerstone of the development of every society and field, so nurturing talent is our top priority. In Hong Kong, we are committed to promoting the development of STEAM education.”
Chan said STEAM, which is learning through problem-solving, could help develop the potential of students who were denied higher education because of weak language competence.
“We recently kick-started a five-year collaboration programme, Shaw STEAMS for Good,” he said.

The second ‘S’ in STEAMS stands for ‘social’, meaning striving for social good. The programme will teach and guide participating students to use their learning to help the community.
The project, run in partnership with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, involves training teachers and students in primary and secondary schools to enable the students to integrate and use knowledge from various subjects to solve real-world problems, including social issues.
The programme also aims to develop a set of STEAM teaching materials, which will be made accessible to the public.
Chan said the foundation also put an emphasis on developing young talent in the arts and culture sector.
“We strive to make Hong Kong a global film and television hub. But we are seeing a talent gap and we hope to nurture new talent to take on the torch,” he said.
“We also want to help young people realise their dream of working in this industry.”
The foundation is working with institutions such as the Academy for Performing Arts, Baptist University and the Design Institute to train young people in film production.
“Working with OSC, we have learned more about smaller charities and understand they are also doing meaningful work. So we are now allocating more resources to these charities while continuing to support big ones,” Chan said.
He noted that three of the foundation’s main pillars – education, healthcare and community development – are aligned with some of the focus areas of current OSC beneficiaries: children and youth, medical and community support.
Commenting on OSC’s current-year theme “everyday heroes”, he said: “There are people who go all out to help others in an emergency. These are our everyday heroes. We hope there are more warm-hearted people like them.”
Since its launch in 1988, OSC has raised more than HK$383 million for 353 projects in Hong Kong.
