Members of the Hong Kong Golf Club flocked this autumn to the putting green for two sports events held in support of local causes.
The Link Hong Kong Open, hosted by the club, has collaborated with annual fundraising campaign Operation Santa Claus (OSC) to infuse a charitable element and foster community engagement at the international mega-event.
Club captain Andy Kwok emphasised that collaborating with OSC was a great way to promote the sport and raise awareness about worthy causes.
“Operation Santa Claus is our trusted partner. We hope that going forward we work even more closely and identify people that are in need in our community so that we can actually use the funds for the right target,” Kwok said.

The 63rd edition of the city’s longest-running annual tournament took place from November 21 to 24 and featured a series of contests, interactive family-friendly activities and competitions for both professionals and amateurs.
This year’s event included for the first time a golfer with disability as it aimed to highlight golf as an inclusive sport with the tagline “Open for All”. World No 1 Kipp Popert, 25, competed at the Fanling golf course on November 24.
Other top players such as Patrick Reed, Justin Rose and Martin Kaymer also took part, alongside local professionals Jason Hak and Leon D’Souza. Reed secured a commanding victory, claiming the prestigious title for the first time.
The event was the second collaboration between the golf club and OSC this year, following the Cup of Kindness, an annual charity tournament held on October 20.

The Cup of Kindness has benefited worthy causes in Hong Kong for more than 35 years.
The October competition saw 224 golfers take part at the course in Fanling, with proceeds from tournament entry fees, raffle tickets, a silent auction and cash donations all contributing to the charity fund.
“The Cup of Kindness started back in 1987 … The whole purpose is that we would like to use the club as an engine to raise funds through our generous members and contribute back to the community,” Kwok said.
The charity event raised HK$1.5 million (US$193,000) for OSC this year. Kwok noted that the club had generated substantial financial support for various charitable organisations in Hong Kong since it was established.
“Throughout the years, I think we have raised more than HK$90 million and over the past five years alone, we have donated close to HK$8 million to Operation Santa Claus,” he said.
OSC’s tagline this year is #EveryoneCanBeASantaClaus. Asked about the initiative, Kwok expressed his desire to embody the spirit of Santa Claus for the broader community.

“Santa Claus is known to bring happiness and smiles to people, society, the community and everyone,” Kwok said.
“No matter how little or how large you want to contribute, any contribution means a lot to those in need, and it will definitely put a smile on their face. So, I think that is great and I would love to be a Santa Claus as well.”
This year marks the 37th anniversary of OSC, which has raised HK$383 million for 353 charitable projects since 1988. There are 11 charitable projects of worthy causes being funded this year.
