The force revealed details of the case on Sunday after arresting the man the day before on suspicion of robbing and assaulting the off-duty officer outside No 348 Nathan Road in Yau Ma Tei.

Senior Inspector So Man-ho of the Yau Tsim Mong district crime squad said the suspect had tried to rob the policeman in the early hours of Saturday, using a sharp object to stab him multiple times.

The assault, which occurred around 2am, continued even after the victim revealed himself to be a law enforcement officer, with bystanders screaming in vain for the assailant to stop.

So said the pair became entangled in a scuffle and the officer was unable to subdue his attacker.
