Redevelopment of Hong Kong’s Instagram-famous Choi Hung Estate to begin in 2028
Housing Department tells Wong Tai Sin District Council the first stage of redevelopment will start in 2028 and the second between 2035 and 2036
A 61-year-old public housing estate famed as an Instagram hotspot in Hong Kong will be redeveloped in three phases, with the process set to start in four years and end by 2049, authorities have said.
The timeline of the long-awaited development plan for the rainbow-coloured Choi Hung Estate in Wong Tai Sin came to light on Wednesday when the Housing Department told the district council the first stage would start in 2028 and the second between 2035 and 2036.
The first batch of affected households will be relocated to the redeveloped Mei Tung Estate, a 30-minute walk from Choi Hung Estate.
“It is expected that the new Mei Tung Estate will provide 2,450 flats [by 2028-29] as initial relocation resources to accommodate one-third of the residents affected,” a document submitted to Wong Tai Sin District Council said.
Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin last year announced the redevelopment plan for the sprawling Choi Hung Estate, home to about 7,400 households in 11 seven- to 20-storey buildings built between 1962 and 1964.
A preliminary proposal last year said the relocation of residents would take 15 years over three stages, yielding 9,200 flats, around 1,800 more than the existing number.
