Renowned Hong Kong doctor accused of making sexual jokes to nurses cleared of misconduct
Medical Council finds gynaecologist Dr Stephen Suen not guilty of professional misconduct, but notes ‘unbecoming’ culture at clinic
A renowned Hong Kong gynaecologist accused of making sexually suggestive comments and jokes to nurses at his clinic has been cleared of misconduct by the profession’s regulatory body.
The Medical Council’s ruling on Sunday over gynaecologist Dr Stephen Suen Sik-hung brought an end to six days of hearings since March.
But the inquiry panel noted it was “unbecoming” for staff of a medical clinic to tell inappropriate jokes in the workplace.
A delighted Suen, a prominent obstetrics and gynaecology specialist, cheered out “justice will prevail” as the ruling was announced.
The complaints against Suen first surfaced in 2022 when several of the nurses at his clinic in Tsim Sha Tsui accused him of making remarks of a sexual nature.
The accusations centred on suggestive jokes that Suen allegedly made about the low neckline of staff members’ uniforms, purchasing a woman’s genitalia and paying for sex, among other remarks.
During the hearing the panel noted there was a “culture of sharing jokes of a sexual nature”.
