While many of the annual traditional festivities, such as lantern carnivals, are set to return this year, the city will also host new events for the first time. New features are also going to be added to other events, including the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance.

The Post explores some of this year’s traditional and modern activities, as well as gives hints on when to catch the “supermoon”.

1. First-ever Mid-Autumn Festival drone show

Hong Kong will stage its first-ever Mid-Autumn-themed drone show along the Wan Chai harbourfront on September 17.

The 10-minute show will kick off at 8pm, with thousands of drones set to form patterns resembling traditional holiday motifs, including mooncakes, lanterns and the pet of moon goddess Chang’e in Chinese mythology, the Jade Rabbit.

The display will also have a fire dragon performance in the sky to complement the famous Tai Hang parade on the same night.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board has advised people to head to prime spots along the waterfront if they want to watch the event as it will not be visible from Kowloon.
