This is the first of a two-part series exploring Hong Kong’s attitude towards sex influencers and whether they have had an impact on a deeply conservative society. Part two can be found here.

Hong Kong model and aspiring actress Erena So Hoi-lam shocked many in the city last month by announcing her entry into Japan’s pornographic video industry.

It was not a decision made on a whim. The 26-year-old, who has sold revealing pictures of herself online, spent a year reaching out to Japanese adult video production houses and approached Taiwanese companies for help too, before landing her first role.

She stars opposite prominent Japanese male porn star Ken Shimizu in her debut adult video released late last month.

So has been unabashed in revealing that she joined the porn industry with her eyes open, and because she enjoyed sex.

In an interview with the Post, she said she also hoped to change Hongkongers’ attitudes towards sex, porn and individuals who go online willingly to sell risqué photos or X-rated videos of themselves.
