Hong Kong lawmaker William Wong Kam-fai has apologised for “causing inconvenience” to the public following his arrest for suspected drink-driving, careless driving and failing to stop and report an accident, after a crash involving his car and two parked vehicles.
“I sincerely apologise for the traffic incident involving me on the campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong [CUHK] a few days ago, which has sparked public discussion and caused inconvenience to the Legislative Council, the university and various sectors,” Wong wrote on his social media on Wednesday.
“The incident has now been handed over to police and relevant government departments for follow-up and handling according to normal procedures, and I will fully cooperate with the investigation.”
A source said on Wednesday that the 66-year-old, an associate dean at CUHK’s engineering faculty, lost control of his vehicle at about 10.46pm on Monday at a staff residence on the campus, crashing into a parked car, which then hit a second vehicle.
Wong then allegedly drove away from the scene and parked his car outside another staff residence. A security guard reported the incident about 30 minutes later.
He later returned but failed a breathalyser test. No one was injured, but all three vehicles sustained damage.
Wong was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, careless driving and failing to stop and report an accident. He has been granted bail and is due to report back to police in late July.
The South China Morning Post has sought comment from Legco president Starry Lee Wai-king.
In response to the incident, the university acknowledged the arrest but declined to comment further as the case was under police investigation.
Wong attended an official reception marking the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to Chinese sovereignty on Wednesday morning.
First elected in a 2022 by-election in the Election Committee constituency, Wong was re-elected in last December’s poll. He is also a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the country’s top political advisory body.

Under Hong Kong law, drink-driving carries a maximum penalty of a HK$25,000 (US$3,190) fine and up to three years’ imprisonment. Careless driving is punishable by a HK$5,000 fine and up to six months’ imprisonment.
Failing to stop after an accident can result in a HK$10,000 fine and up to one year in prison, while failing to report an accident carries a maximum HK$25,000 fine and six months’ imprisonment.
Under the Basic Law, lawmakers convicted and sentenced to one month or more in prison for criminal offences may be disqualified if Legco passes a motion to remove them by a two-thirds majority.
They may also lose their seats if two-thirds of members present vote to censure them for misbehaviour or breach of oath.
Under Legco’s “Code for Members”, those found guilty of misconduct may face penalties ranging from written warnings to suspension and pay deductions, following an investigation by the legislature’s supervisory committee.
Earlier this year, lawmaker Judy Chan Kapui was fined HK$2,000 (US$255) and banned from driving for one month after pleading guilty to driving against the flow of traffic in January. The legislature’s supervisory committee issued her a written warning.
