A by-election to select members of the committee responsible for selecting Hong Kong’s leader was held on Sunday despite the issuance of a No 3 typhoon signal, with a 97 per cent turnout.

More than 3,500 registered voters cast their ballots in the poll, in which 28 candidates from six Election Committee subsectors contested 21 available seats.

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu congratulated the successful candidates and thanked voters who took part in the by-election.

“[The Election Committee] plays a pivotal role in [the city]’s improved electoral system and implementation of the principle of ‘patriots administering Hong Kong’,” he said.

Lee said he expected all members of the committee to fulfil their responsibilities dutifully and contribute to the steadfast and successful implementation of the “one country, two systems” principle in the coming Legislative Council election.
