Macau ‘gradually unleashing deep potential’ in push for better future: Xi
President and his wife Peng Liyuan arrive in Macau on visit to mark 25th anniversary of the city’s return to Chinese administration
President Xi Jinping has said Macau is “gradually unleashing deep potential accumulated over time” and can create a better future through diligence and innovation, as he arrived for a three-day visit to mark the 25th anniversary of the city’s return to Chinese administration.
Xi said he would “go around, take a look and deliberate” on development plans in Macau, which he described as the “cherished pearl of the motherland” and a source of pride for both the city’s residents and the entire country.
“Over the past 25 years, the practice of ‘one country, two systems’ with Macau characteristics has achieved universal recognition as a success, showing great vitality and unique charm,” he said shortly after landing at the city’s airport on Wednesday.
“Macau’s development is one that gradually unleashes deep potential accumulated over time with a promising future … I believe that as long as we give full play to the institutional advantages of one country, two systems and dare to strive and innovate, Macau must be able to create a better future.
“I have always been thinking about developments here and the well-being of all residents. In the next few days, I will go around and take a look, engage extensively with friends from all walks of life, and deliberate on Macau’s development plans.”
The president and his wife Peng Liyuan walked down a red-carpeted staircase from a jumbo jet at 4.28pm and were welcomed at Macau airport by chief executive-designate Sam Hou-fai, incumbent leader Ho Iat-seng and a delegation of top officials.
