Horace Cheung Kwok-kwan, vice-chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) and an Executive Council member, is likely to take up the new post of deputy secretary for justice in the next administration, the Post has learned.
On his potential appointment, Cheung said: “I have no comments on this for now, but the DAB hopes the next administration will be formed as soon as possible and start serving Hong Kong citizens from July 1.”
The 48-year-old lawmaker refrained from voting in a meeting of the Legislative Council’s Finance Committee on Friday on the government’s massive restructuring plan.
Speaking to the press after attending the opening of a DAB district office in Chai Wan on Saturday, Cheung said he was “working on something else” during the vote.
A lawyer by profession, Cheung was elected to Legco in 2016 and appointed as an Exco member the following year by Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor. He served as a district councillor for Central and Western from 2012 to 2019.
“Cheung’s legal expertise and political experience make him the best candidate to take up this newly created position,” a source familiar with Lee’s thinking said.
