Alvin Yeung Ngok-kiu

Alvin Yeung Ngok-kiu, a barrister who became well known for his pro-bono work during the Occupy movement in 2014, was groomed by former lawmaker and mentor Ronny Tong Ka-wah – whose resignation triggered the by-election.
Yeung, 34, is seen as a rising star among the pan-democrats. He was previously an activist in the now-defunct 7.1 People Pile, a protest group named after the 2003 anti-government march.
A member of the Civic Party since 2011, Yeung previously admitted that being named as Tong’s successor had given him immense pressure, but added: “The ability to take up pressure, I think, is essential, to any person who has the inspiration to join politics.”
Yeung previously held Canadian citizenship, and obtained Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Western Ontario. He gave up his Canadian passport in 2012 when he stood with Tong for the Legco elections.
He also obtained master degrees from Peking University and Bristol University.
“If I get into Legco the first thing I’ll participate in is filibustering against the ‘internet Article 23’, and also the budget for the high-speed rail link,” Yeung said.

Holden Chow Ho-ding

Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong
A rising star in the biggest pro-Beijing government in Hong Kong, Holden Chow Ho-ding is best remembered for crying in a televised election debate.
The 36-year-old vice-chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong broke down in tears towards the end of a one-hour TVB debate last week, leading to much mocking by internet users.
“This drop of tear is for Hongkongers,” he said in a shaky voice, as he lamented the political struggle that had taken place.
Like other DAB notables, Chow spared no effort in emphasising the importance of harmony throughout his electioneering.
A lawyer by profession, his qualification came under challenge after internet users found his status on the Law Society’s website that showed his certificate did not allow him to practise as a sole proprietor or in partnership.
While it turned out he was indeed qualified, web users soon discovered he was an in-house legal adviser for New World Development. Allegations that he did not disclose his company affiliation soon escalated, especially given another position he held as a member of the Islands district council.
His fellow party members insisted he was not in breach of any rules.
Asked what he would do if elected to Legco, Chow said: “As I have said since the beginning, get Hong Kong back on the right track ... We are against violence, we are against filibustering.”

Edward Leung Tin-kei

Edward Leung Tin-kei is no ordinary post-90s activist. He and his localism group, Hong Kong Indigenous, have been at the forefront of protests since the group was founded after the Occupy Central movement.
During the Mong Kok riot earlier this month, Leung was at the forefront, shouting into a loudspeaker. He was later arrested and charged with rioting.
The rise of Leung and his group has divided pro-democracy advocates. Young people who are frustrated that the pan-democratic parties have not been able to bring more change to the city’s undemocratic political system over the years have shifted their support to Leung.

“We don’t need the pan-democrats or the pro-establishment. Vote for localism,” Leung told voters in Tseung Kwan O on the eveof the election, declaring war on both camps.
Asked of his stance on an independent Hong Kong, he has said that this is something he is ready to fight for. Leung has stressed that “democracy does not fall from the sky”, pledging that “the fruits of democracy have to be fought for with blood and sweat”.
Asked what would be his first move were he elected to Legco, Leung said: “If I’m elected, the first thing I will do is try to stop work on the express rail link by whatever means possible, a project I have resented since I was young but was unable to do anything about.”
Also running in the by-election are Nelson Wong Sing-chi of Third Side and independents Christine Fong Kwok-shan, Albert Leung Sze-ho and Lau Chi-shing.
