The private data of about 33,000 customers of TVB-owned group-buying platform Neigbuy has been compromised in a suspected cyberattack, with police saying they have received six reports of scammers posing as staff.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data confirmed on Tuesday that it had received a data breach notification from the company on Sunday, and had initiated a formal investigation.
The platform, founded in 2018 and majority-owned by free-to-air television broadcaster TVB, offers limited-time deals on groceries, fresh produce, household goods and other products.
The privacy watchdog said that signs of a suspected cyberattack, involving unauthorised data access, were first detected on August 24.
The security incident had affected 33,054 customers, with the potentially compromised information including their names, addresses, emails, phone numbers and online shopping order histories, it said.
The office advised Neigbuy customers to change their account passwords and enable multi-factor authentication. They should also remain vigilant if contacted by unknown or suspicious parties, it urged.
Police said on Monday that six cases involving fraudsters posing as Neigbuy customer service staff had been reported over the past week, with the total losses exceeding HK$300,000 (US$38,270).
The force also disclosed on its Facebook page for the CyberDefender platform that scammers were posing as Neigbuy customer service staff and claiming to be handling lost parcels, refunds or security deposits.
Fraudsters were requesting order screenshots and recipient contact details to execute the scams, police added.
In a statement posted on its website, Neigbuy confirmed that it had reported the incident to police and the privacy watchdog.
The company said it had isolated affected systems, updated account credentials, and tightened access controls and anomaly monitoring.
Neigbuy added that customers’ passwords, credit card details and bank account information were not compromised.
It urged customers to be wary of suspicious calls or messages, stressing that staff would never request passwords, verification codes or bank transfers.
