Hong Kong police have arrested a 14-year-old boy on suspicion of wounding for allegedly shoving a classmate who remains in a serious condition two weeks after the incident.
The force said on Friday that the suspect was arrested on Monday after an in-depth investigation.
The teenager was subsequently released on bail pending further investigation and was required to report to police in late July, it added.
The arrest was in connection with a report filed on July 3 about a 16-year-old boy who lost consciousness at school.
Preliminary investigations suggested the suspect had pushed the victim in a classroom, causing him to lose consciousness and need treatment at Tuen Mun Hospital.
It was understood that the incident took place at Tuen Mun Government Secondary School.
A source earlier said students were returning to their classrooms to collect their bags when the incident occurred.
The 16-year-old tried to enter his classroom through a window after several students blocked the door, the insider said, adding the suspect was believed to have accidentally knocked the older boy down from behind, causing him to fall into the room.
The victim complained of feeling dizzy and nauseous and, after being sent to hospital, was found to have signs of a suspected brain haemorrhage, the source said.
The Hospital Authority said on Friday that the boy’s condition had improved from critical to serious.
The Education Bureau said it was deeply concerned about the incident and had acted promptly.
“The school has activated its crisis management team and will maintain contact with the parents of the students involved, providing support,” the bureau said.
But it declined to provide additional details as the police investigation was ongoing.
“The Education Bureau will continue to maintain contact with the school, providing appropriate advice and necessary support,” it added.
