Man arrested in Hong Kong for allegedly doxxing peer in industry chat groups
Both the arrestee, 46, and victim are in the cross-boundary vehicle business
A man in Hong Kong has been arrested for allegedly exposing an industry peer’s identity card information and signature across trade chat groups without the victim’s consent.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) said on Thursday that a 46-year-old man had been arrested in the New Territories on suspicion of doxxing.
The victim works in the cross-boundary vehicle business, handling tasks such as leasing vehicles and licence applications for customers.
“In late November 2025, a total of four messages, including video clips, containing the victim’s personal data and negative comments against him were posted and forwarded to two chat groups comprising members of the same trade on an instant messaging application,” a PCPD spokesman said.
“The personal data disclosed included the victim’s Chinese and English surnames, English alias, his account name and profile picture of one instant messaging application.”
Information revealed included the registration numbers of his car in Guangdong and Hong Kong, as well as images of his Hong Kong and Macau identity cards, driver’s licence, and his home return permit.
The personal documents revealed the victim’s names in English and Chinese, card numbers, his birthday, gender, height, address, nationality, signature and photos.
