4 Lingnan University students in Hong Kong arrested over HK$1 million theft
Two former and two current student union committee members detained by police for allegedly stealing from the organisation

Two former and two current student union committee members of Lingnan University in Hong Kong have been arrested for allegedly stealing nearly HK$1 million (US$127,450) to pay off credit card bills and personal loans, as well as to fund investment accounts.
Police said on Thursday that they were considering freezing the accounts of two students to trace the union’s funds. The force added it must keep the informant’s identity confidential when asked if Lingnan University had reported the matter.
A spokeswoman for Lingnan University said it was investigating the matter and would cooperate with the police investigation. She declined to comment on whether the university had reported the case to police.
Au Yeung Tak, chief inspector of the force’s regional crime unit of the New Territories North Regional Headquarters, told the media that officers had arrested two former and two current committee members of the university’s student union.
The three men and a woman, aged from 21 to 24, were arrested on suspicion of theft and conspiracy to steal.
He said that an investigation into the student union’s financial accounts, spanning from April 2024 to April 2025, revealed that the two former committee members had issued four cheques totalling HK$1.3 million.
Au Yeung said that one cheque for HK$400,000 was credited to a local student organisation, while the remaining HK$900,000, via three cheques, was credited to the personal accounts of the two current committee members.
