Hong Kong police have arrested a domestic helper on suspicion of stealing more than HK$203,000 (US$26,025) in cash from her employer’s flat in Happy Valley.

The woman was detained on Sunday night, hours after her 63-year-old female employer reported the alleged theft at the upmarket residential complex The Leighton Hill.

The Indonesian helper, 43, was accused of stealing HK$200,000 and 65,000 yen (US$446) from the flat, the force said on Monday.

The helper was detained during an investigation by officers from Wan Chai police district, with about HK$10,000 in cash retrieved, it added. She remained in custody as of Monday morning.

Theft by domestic helpers “occasionally” surfaces in the city, according to Hong Kong-based California Insurance, which offers insurance covering domestic helpers.

“Employers should be aware of the helper’s financial position, which is one of the most critical reasons for a helper to commit theft of employer’s property or cash,” chief executive Ronald Kwan said.
