‘I won’t give up on seeking justice,’ father of Hong Kong girl Chau Tin-yu says
Chau’s father expresses disappointment after authorities decide not to launch criminal prosecution into death of eight-year-old girl

The father of an eight-year-old girl who died after a blood transfusion was delayed during an operation in Hong Kong has said he will seek more details regarding an investigation into the case, following authorities’ decision not to launch a criminal prosecution.
The pledge by Eddie Chau, father of Chau Tin-yu, on Tuesday came a day after he said on social media that police informed him the Department of Justice would not proceed with criminal prosecution.
According to a letter sent by the force to the father, the department deemed there would not be any reasonable chance of a conviction in court after it reviewed evidence, relevant laws and standards of proof.
“I am extremely disappointed with the result, but I will not give up on seeking justice for Tin-yu,” said the father of the girl, who died in March last year.
Tin-yu was four when she was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of cancer, and had chemotherapy and radiotherapy which shrank the tumour to a size suitable for removal.
But during surgery at Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam in May 2020, a blood transfusion was delayed by 48 minutes and her heart stopped beating for 52 minutes. She emerged from the operating theatre in a vegetative state.
