District Judge Ernest Lin Kam-hung on Monday also sentenced the ex-lawmaker’s son, Ricky Chim Kim-lun, 55, to three years and one month in prison for the same offence.

Lin said the duo faced the same liability over their different roles in the case, with the 78-year-old father being the “planner” and the son the “executor”.

The judge said the pair used the listed company as their “tools for personal ambitions”, preventing the board of directors from making decisions for the firm’s benefit, while also harming the interests of minority shareholders.

Lin said the actions of the two Chims not only affected other investors but also the city’s reputation as an international financial centre.

Reputational damage could cause some investors to refrain from injecting capital into the city, the judge said, noting the “unquantifiable but very serious” impact of the case.
