Elderly man dies after falling off ship into sea near Hong Kong’s Lamma Island

A 69-year-old man has died after falling off a ship near Hong Kong’s Lamma Island, and authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.

Police received a report shortly before 11.30am on Friday morning, as a man aboard a cargo ship passing by the area reported seeing another fall into the sea while climbing a ladder.

“The man was taken back onto the ship and sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital [in Chai Wan] by helicopter. He was later certified dead,” a force spokesman told the Post, adding the time of death was 2.04pm.

The cause of death has yet to be determined.

According to police, the deceased was believed to be a South Asian man holding a Hong Kong identity card.
