Hong Kong police have arrested four people in connection with a knife attack in Yuen Long earlier this week that left one man dead and another injured.

Acting senior superintendent Basil Tang Yick-kay of the New Territories North regional headquarters said on Thursday that the four suspects and others at large belonged to a triad group.

Preliminary investigations suggested the attack stemmed from long-standing grievances and relationship entanglements.

Tang said officers on Wednesday arrested a suspect in his flat and another at Hong Kong airport as he attempted to flee, while two others were detained by Thai authorities as they arrived in Bangkok that evening. They were sent back to Hong Kong on Thursday.

“The four are being detained and our arrest operation continues, anyone who witnessed the attack or can provide any information please contact police,” he said.

“Since this case was extremely egregious and involved a brutal attack, police started a months-long anti-triad operation on January 22 to crack down on their activities and sources of income.”

The suspects were allegedly involved in the attack on two men around 5.30am on Wednesday. Seven to eight masked attackers wielding knives appeared from four black vehicles and assaulted the pair near Hi Yip Factory Building on Wang Yip Street West in Yuen Long. The assailants fled the scene in the vehicles.
