A Hong Kong teacher has been jailed for six months for taking upskirt videos of four students in class earlier this year, with the sentencing magistrate noting he had a “relatively high” chance of reoffending in the future.

Chan Yue-tak, 26, was escorted to Tuen Mun Court on Tuesday to be sentenced on five counts of unlawful recording or observation of private parts arising from as many incidents at a secondary school in the same district.

Chan admitted using his mobile phone to shoot upskirt footage of four 13-year-old girls – one of whom was targeted twice – while they were answering questions in front of a blackboard in January and February this year.

A prosecution summary of the case said the defendant committed the crimes while standing or crouching behind his victims. On some occasions, he pretended to either tie his shoelaces or pick up a chalk he deliberately dropped on the ground with his phone in his hand.

Chan’s first offence initially went unnoticed, but his students became increasingly suspicious of him as he committed the crime four times in 11 days between January 22 and February 1.

The court heard the girl who was filmed twice confronted Chan after noticing he had put his phone on the ground near where she stood, but the teacher feigned ignorance and picked up his device “as if he did nothing wrong”.
