Hong Kong police have arrested five people in the latest crackdown on the illegal use of e-bicycles and other powered devices in Kowloon.
The force said on Thursday that the five men, aged 34 to 63, were intercepted the day before in Kwun Tong, Sau Mau Ping and Tseung Kwan O.
The five were detained on suspicion of “riding an unregistered electric mobility device, driving without a licence, using a vehicle without third-party insurance, and riding without wearing protective helmets”, police said.
Officers seized three e-bicycles and two e-scooters during Wednesday’s operation.
All the suspects have been released on bail pending further investigation and are required to report back to police next month.

Police emphasised that these electric mobility devices should not be used on roads alongside regular vehicles, adding that “it is also not suitable to use them on pavements or bike paths”.
The force said anyone using an unregistered and unlicensed electric mobility device on roads, pedestrian walkways or bike paths might violate the Road Traffic Ordinance and other regulations.
The offences were punishable by up to 12 months in prison and a HK$10,000 (US$1,300) fine, police said.
Battery-powered machines such as e-bicycles and e-scooters are classified as motorised vehicles under Hong Kong law.
In July, 36 asylum seekers were among 44 men arrested in a six-week crackdown on people illegally working as food delivery couriers using e-bicycles in the downtown areas of Kowloon.
In June, police rounded up 84 people in a three-day crackdown on the illegal use of electric mobility devices in the New Territories, marking the biggest operation of this kind in recent years.
