Woman arrested for suspected child neglect after 2 rescued from Hong Kong flat fire
Online video footage shows flames and smoke coming out of high-rise flat in Tsz Wan Shan with two children trapped inside
A 52-year-old woman has been arrested for suspected child neglect after her two grandchildren were rescued by firefighters from a burning flat in Hong Kong’s Tsz Wan Shan on Saturday.
Police were alerted at 11.45am to two children being trapped alone in a high-rise flat at Lok Moon House at Tsz Lok Estate with smoke seen coming out of the home.
A nine-year-old girl and her seven-year-old brother were rescued by firefighters, who used a jet and mobilised a breathing apparatus team to fight the blaze, which was put out at 12.43pm.
Online video footage showed flames and smoke coming out of the flat and its exterior walls blackened.
About 100 residents were evacuated to safety. No injuries were reported, according to police.
Officers arrested the children’s grandmother, who lived with the two, on suspicion of child neglect.
The force said the fire was believed to have been caused by a short circuit in a lamp and there was no evidence the blaze involved criminal elements.
