Hong Kong police arrest van driver who hit woman, leaving her in critical condition
Delivery van hits pedestrian near junction of Shantung Street and Nathan Road at around 10.11am, according to force
Hong Kong police have arrested the driver of a delivery van after it knocked down a 53-year-old woman at a road junction in Mong Kok on Thursday, leaving her in a life-threatening condition in hospital.
The vehicle, driven by a 59-year-old man, struck the pedestrian when it turned onto Shantung Street from Nathan Road at around 10.11am, according to the force.
A police spokesman said the woman was injured in the head and was in a semi-conscious state while being carried into an ambulance.
“Subsequently, she lost consciousness in Queen Elizabeth Hospital [in Yau Ma Tei],” he said.
As of Thursday afternoon, the woman remained in a critical condition in hospital, a government spokeswoman said.
Police arrested the driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. Officers from the Kowloon West traffic unit are following up on the case.
Separately, a motorist was arrested for alleged drink-driving after a collision between his car and three other vehicles on a Tuen Mun highway in the early hours of Thursday, sending three people to hospital.
