Hong Kong taxi driver, 63, arrested for allegedly hitting woman, trapping her under car

A Hong Kong cabby has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after his taxi knocked down a woman and trapped her underneath near the Science Park in Tai Po.

The man, 63, was turning left from Chong San Road onto Fo Yin Road when his vehicle struck the woman, 45, soon after 7.30am on Tuesday, police said.

“The woman was trapped under the vehicle and had to be freed by firefighters,” the force said.

She suffered injuries to her head and all four limbs and was transported to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, where she was listed as being in a serious condition.

Police arrested the taxi driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. Officers from the New Territories North traffic unit are following up on the case.

Latest police figures show the number of people killed or seriously injured in traffic accidents across the city dropped by 39.4 per cent to 478 in the first seven months of this year from 790 in the same period in 2023.
