Hong Kong customs seizes HK$5.8 million of heroin hidden in durian shipment

Hong Kong customs officers have arrested three men after seizing about HK$5.8 million (US$742,620) worth of heroin hidden among durians in an air consignment.

Officers at the airport on Friday inspected the package that was declared as carrying durian and mochi from Malaysia.

About 8.4kg (18.5lbs) of suspected heroin was discovered inside.

Officers conducted a controlled delivery operation in Mong Kok which resulted in the arrest of three men, aged between 25 and 53, who were suspected to be connected to the case.

The investigation is ongoing.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in such substances is a severe offence punishable by a maximum penalty of a HK$5 million fine and life imprisonment.
