A love triangle dispute is believed to be behind the fatal attack on the alleged operator of a gambling den who was hit on the head with a hammer more than 10 times, Hong Kong police have revealed.

The force said officers had arrested two men and three women in Yau Ma Tei and Ho Man Tin within 24 hours of the attack on Pilkem Street on Sunday.

Superintendent Ching Chi-yan, an assistant Yau Tsim district commander for crime, said the suspects included the alleged attacker, aged 40, and his 32-year-old girlfriend.

Ching said the pair were detained on suspicion of killing the 33-year-old victim, who allegedly worked as the operator of a gambling den on Pilkem Street in Yau Ma Tei.

He said the three other suspects, aged 34 to 56, were apprehended for aiding and abetting the alleged attacker.

“We reasonably believe these three arrestees were aware of the [alleged murderer] who had committed the crime and assisted him in evading arrest,” Ching said, adding further arrests were possible as the investigation was ongoing.
