A Hong Kong policeman has been accused of forging the signature of his supervisor twice to meet a detained woman with whom he had an extramarital relationship.

Senior Detective Constable Cheung Ka-lok, 43, told Eastern Court the woman, whom the court granted anonymity, was an informant in a drug case, which the prosecution denied.

Cheung denied abusing his position for personal gain, insisting he twice met her in barrier-free, one-on-one sessions in his professional capacity at Tai Lam Centre for Women, where she was remanded in jail custody over allegations of theft, solely for the purpose of collecting information about drug trades from her.

The court heard that police’s criminal intelligence bureau had not verified if the woman was trustworthy.

Cheung confessed that he had developed an intimate relationship with the woman long before she was caught in the theft case.
