100 Guangdong drivers seek entry into Hong Kong urban areas as bookings open
Applications came from 1,700 winners of a November 23 ballot conducted by the Guangdong authorities, which drew 2,388 registrations

Hong Kong authorities have received more than 100 permit applications on the first day from mainland Chinese car owners seeking to drive directly into the city’s urban areas after bookings opened under a much-awaited cross-border entry scheme.
The applications for the “Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles” scheme came from among 1,700 winners of a November 23 ballot conducted by the province’s authorities, which drew 2,388 registrations, the Transport Department said on Wednesday.
After initial reviews by mainland authorities, the applications will be transferred to the department for approval.
Applicants must handle all procedures themselves, including vehicle inspections, electronic contact verification and insurance, and submit valid documents via an online platform.
Approved Guangdong private cars can then cross into Hong Kong at booked time slots via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. The first batch of successful applicants will be able to drive into Hong Kong’s urban areas on December 23.
The scheme, along with its northbound counterpart allowing Hong Kong vehicles to travel to the mainland, promotes Greater Bay Area integration.
