The opening ceremony of Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park on March 1 will boast a star-studded line-up that includes martial artist Donnie Yen Ji-dan, Cantopop diva Joey Yung Cho-yee and singer Michael “MC” Cheung Tin-fu, with tickets priced at HK$10 (US$1.29) each.

But Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui said on Thursday that the 1½-hour event at Kai Tak Stadium would only be aired later in the evening on four television channels rather than being broadcast live from 6.30pm.

She said the government hoped to present to the public a skilfully made event which showed all the best angles of the main stadium in the HK$30 billion sports park.

“Most of the people can’t make it home at 6.30pm to watch a live broadcast, so we’ve decided to broadcast an edited version at 9.30pm to let everyone enjoy the show at ease without interruptions,” she said.

“The edited version will allow everyone to see the most spectacular and magnificent side of the stadium. Another consideration is that we don’t want to clash it with the TV news broadcasts, but this is not the main reason.”

Law said 33,600 of the stadium’s 50,000 seats would be open for the show, with 8,500 tickets priced at HK$10 each to go on sale on Friday. Another 8,300 will be given away for free to low-income families, district councillors and community groups. The remaining 16,800 tickets will be handed out by the park’s operator to its sponsors, partners and cooperating units.
