Hong Kong’s weather forecaster could issue a higher typhoon signal closer to the weekend after Tropical Cyclone Saudel experienced a rare resurgence, with the potential to change course over the South China Sea and edge towards the Pearl River Delta.
The Observatory said the No 1 typhoon signal would remain in force for the rest of Wednesday and into Thursday morning, as Saudel was expected to linger over the northeastern South China Sea and remain about 300km (167 miles) or more from the city.
“Under the combined effect of Saudel and the northeast monsoon, local winds are occasionally strong offshore and on high ground. The No 1 signal is expected to remain in force for the rest of [Wednesday] and into [Thursday] morning,” the forecaster said.
Saudel is a name provided by the Federated States of Micronesia and refers to the guards of a legendary ruler of Pohnpei, one of the country’s islands.
Hong Kong is expected to remain mainly cloudy on Wednesday, with a few squally showers and maximum temperatures of about 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit).
But the Observatory warned that Saudel would gradually turn westwards on Thursday and skirt the coast of eastern Guangdong, bringing uncertainty in the days that followed.
“It will edge closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta again on Friday. There will be rather large uncertainties over its intensity by then,” the forecaster said.
“The Observatory will closely monitor Saudel’s movement and assess the need to issue the strong wind signal No 3 as it edges closer to the Pearl River Delta.”




Kok Mang-hin, a senior scientific officer at the Observatory, said it remained uncertain whether Saudel would track closer to land or stay out at sea.
“If it skirts closer to land, Saudel will weaken more quickly. However, if it stays mostly over the sea off the coast of eastern Guangdong, it will weaken more slowly,” he told a radio programme.
Saudel made landfall in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang on Friday morning. It later strengthened again, prompting the Observatory to issue the No 1 typhoon signal on Monday evening.
Kok said the storm had earlier weakened into an area of low pressure, but intensified into a tropical depression on Monday.
“As the remnants [of Saudel] moved back over the ocean from land, they were able to reabsorb energy from the sea, supported by a relatively ample supply of moisture. This allowed associated convection currents to regenerate,” he said.
“Therefore, it re-intensified into a tropical depression again over the southeastern coastal waters of Hainan Island.”
Kok added that it was rare for the remnants of a tropical cyclone to re-intensify, citing the case of Tropical Storm Son-Tinh in 2018.
Observatory records showed that Son-Tinh strengthened into a tropical storm before degenerating into an area of low pressure over northern Vietnam in July that year.
The low-pressure area associated with the storm’s remnants then made a sharp turn eastwards and intensified into a tropical depression over Beibu Wan in China.
Son-Tinh first prompted the Observatory to issue a No 1 typhoon signal and then upgrade it to a No 3 signal. All warning signals were cancelled before Son-Tinh intensified and led to another No 1 signal.
