Hong Kong’s main psychiatric hospital has unveiled the city’s first facility exclusively dedicated to child and adolescent patients, as part of a wider redevelopment that offers upgraded wards designed to enhance service quality and foster recovery.
The redevelopment of Kwai Chung Hospital has increased the total construction floor area from 80,000 to 134,000 square metres, ensuring it can provide 1,000 beds for psychiatric patients.
It also involved the reallocation of specialist outpatient clinics, day hospital facilities and inpatient services to new blocks.
“In psychiatry, the environment itself serves as a form of therapy,” Dr Cheng Koi-man, the hospital’s chief executive, said on Wednesday.
“Compared with the old hospital, this space creates an open, safe and community-like therapeutic environment while offering more indoor and outdoor spaces for inpatients, breaking the public’s stereotype of traditional and enclosed psychiatric management.”

The redeveloped campus includes a new main facility and a child and adolescent block, which is also Hong Kong’s only site dedicated to psychiatric care for patients under 18.
“Our services are consolidated within the same building, integrating comprehensive youth outpatient clinics, a day hospital and inpatient wards under one roof,” Cheng said, adding that the design aimed to achieve a one-stop framework.
“This significantly improves the overall consultation and admission workflows, providing vital support for the treatment of children and adolescents.
“Our professional team hosts workshops for carers to teach skills for continuing therapy at home, ensuring parents can keep helping their children after leaving the hospital.”
The revamped main building has wards with one- and six-patient rooms offering expanded bed spacing, to help reduce interpersonal friction among patients.
Safety features have been built directly into the cubicles and private washrooms, including angled shower heads, taps and flexible rubber coat hooks designed to prevent self-harm.
Every ward also includes direct access to a garden, where assessed patients can relax outdoors under staff supervision.

Cheng said the hospital now received about 3,000 new child and adolescent psychiatric cases annually, noting it was a 10 per cent increase from 2022.
Across all age groups, the hospital handled about 12,000 new psychiatric cases each year alongside 250,000 outpatient attendances, he noted.
Some services, including back-office operations and the mental health hotline, are set to complete their relocation by September.
Subsequent follow-up project works will commence later, including the demolition of the old blocks to make way for the construction of a rehabilitation garden, which will provide more outdoor activity space to foster patients’ recovery.
The hospital’s redevelopment was first proposed in the 2013 policy address, with project planning commencing in mid-2016 and construction beginning in 2019.
The hospital serves about 25 per cent of psychiatric patients in Hong Kong and provides services for residents in Kwai Chung, Tsing Yi, Tsuen Wan, North Lantau, Mong Kok, Sham Shui Po and Wong Tai Sin.
