The Hong Kong Observatory issued the No 1 typhoon warning at 7.40pm on Friday and said it would consider upgrading to a higher signal in the early afternoon of the next day, as Severe Tropical Storm Matmo moves nearer to the city.
Matmo was the 12th storm to trigger a warning in Hong Kong this year, the most since 1946, but the typhoon season had yet to come to an end, it warned.

The forecaster said Matmo had already entered within 800km (497 miles) of Hong Kong and would move across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea while intensifying gradually.
“Matmo is expected to maintain a distance of about 500km or more from Hong Kong [on Friday night] and [Saturday] morning. The standby signal, No 1, will remain in force until noon [on Saturday],” it said.
