The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled the amber rainstorm warning on Thursday afternoon, two hours after it was issued.

The forecaster lifted the warning at 7.05pm. Heavy showers and thunderstorms had earlier hit the city.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Observatory cancelled the No 1 typhoon signal. It had said that rainbands associated with a tropical depression would still bring squalls on Thursday.

The Observatory earlier said that squally showers had affected the coast of Guangdong in the morning, bringing about 20mm of rainfall over parts of the city and occasionally strong winds to offshore areas and at high ground.

It had also said that the weather in Hong Kong on Thursday was likely to be mainly cloudy with squally showers and thunderstorms, accompanied by sunny intervals during the day.
