Runners taking part in Hong Kong’s biggest annual marathon have been warned they might be competing on the coldest day so far this winter on Sunday, with temperatures set to drop to as low as 9 degrees Celsius (48 Fahrenheit).

The Observatory said on Thursday an intense winter monsoon would reach the coast of southern China tomorrow morning, with temperatures forecast to drop to their lowest point on Sunday, when the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon is scheduled.

“The weather will be cold in the morning and at night over the region, and very cold over inland areas over the weekend,” the forecaster said.

Temperatures would range between 13 and 18 degrees on Friday and were expected to drop throughout the day and into Saturday, the Observatory said.

“[Temperatures] will drop further to about 9 to 10 degrees on Sunday. It may become the lowest record in this winter,” the forecaster said. “It will be very cold over many places in the New Territories over the weekend.”

The mercury is forecast to range between 10 and 16 degrees on Sunday. The Observatory said that it would be cooler in the morning and “very dry” during the rest of the day.
