Hong Kong’s weather forecaster may issue the No 3 typhoon warning signal this weekend, as the approaching Severe Typhoon Yinxing put the city’s annual cross-harbour swimming race in doubt.

The No 1 warning signal was issued at 12.40pm on Friday, with the Observatory saying strong winds associated with the typhoon should have little impact on the city due to the storm’s relatively small circulation.

Yinxing was estimated to be about 490km (304 miles) south-southeast of the city as of 10pm and forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 15km/h (9mph) across the northern part of the South China Sea.

Winds over the coast of the Guangdong province could strengthen between Saturday and Sunday morning as a result of the combined effects of the typhoon and the northeast monsoon.

“Depending on the distance between Yinxing and the Pearl River Estuary, intensity of Yinxing and the local wind conditions, the Observatory will then assess the need for issuance of the strong wind signal, No 3,” the Observatory said.

The city also experienced its coolest weather yet this autumn, with the Observatory logging a minimum temperature of 20.9 degrees Celsius (69.6 Fahrenheit) at its headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui. It was a couple of degrees cooler in the New Territories.
