Hong Kong’s third medical school must avoid unhealthy competition: health minister
Secretary of Health Lo Chung-mau also says universities interested in running school will receive invitations by end of year
Hong Kong’s health minister has stressed the importance of avoiding “unhealthy competition” with the creation of the city’s third medical school, adding that invitations to universities interested in running the facility will go out by the end of the year.
Secretary of Health Lo Chung-mau also said on Thursday that interested parties would need to submit their proposals before the end of the first quarter of 2025, after authorities earlier announced a task force would be set up to oversee the process.
“We hope that there will be a new source of students and the third medical school will not be competing for the [same pool of] students with the existing two institutions,” he said.
“It is very important to avoid unhealthy competition.”
Lo said that admitting students with bachelor’s degrees could help the future medical school diversify its intake source and attract applicants from around the world.
Such graduates were also likely to remain in Hong Kong to work after obtaining a local medical licence, helping to expand the city’s pool of skilled talent.
