Whale-come party? Second Hong Kong sighting in 2 days as experts tell public to leave mammal in peace
- Marine police say they spotted a whale in waters off Sai Kung, but not immediately clear if animal is same one from day before
- Marine experts, authorities urge residents ‘not to go out to sea to search for whales’ to reduce possible human nuisance

A whale has been sighted in Hong Kong waters for the second time in two days, authorities have said while warning residents against going out in search of the marine mammal amid such a rare occurrence.
Marine police on Friday afternoon said they had spotted a whale near High Island, also known as Leung Shuen Wan, a day after a similar sighting close to Millionaire’s Beach in the same Sai Kung waters.
It was not immediately clear whether the sightings were of the same whale.
“The department appeals to members of the public not to go out to sea to search for whales, so as to reduce possible human nuisance,” the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said.
Experts said the marine mammal spotted on Thursday was believed to be a Bryde’s whale, citing its size and shape.
The department did not specify the species of the whale seen on Friday.
