Macau police have arrested two Hong Kong sisters for allegedly taking a bag containing more than HK$612,000 (US$78,700) in cash that was left in a taxi during their visit to the casino hub last month.

The two women, who are in their sixties and seventies, were apprehended on Sunday when they returned to Macau via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.

Macau police shared details about the arrests on Monday, saying a man reported in March that he had left the bag in the back of a taxi and suspected someone had taken it without reporting the discovery.

The force said it had identified the suspects thanks to the city’s surveillance systems and the taxi’s camera, with the pair later intercepted at the crossing point.

“Upon questioning, one of the women admitted that she had picked up the bag out of greed and given HK$200,000 in cash to her sister, who was travelling with her,” Macau police wrote on social media.

“She said she had spent some of the cash and kept the rest at her home in Hong Kong.”
