University of Hong Kong head to update council this month on hiring of senior management jobs
Resolution from HKU governing body says Xiang Zhang must submit update on hiring process, as some positions still vacant or temporally filled
Hong Kong’s oldest university has said its president will provide an update at the end of this month on his efforts to fill various senior management positions, adding that the institution hopes to carry out the search as quickly as possible.
The governing council at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) on Monday night also said a resolution adopted last week had approved the selection of two new senior members, with the decision confirming an earlier report from the Post.
The new appointees include engineering Professor Norman Tien Chihnan, who will oversee the university’s administrative and financial wings as interim executive vice-president.
The other is the Dr Wallace Lau Chak-sing, the university’s medical dean, who will assume the positions of interim vice-president and pro-vice-chancellor.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said in June that the government would set up an independent group to clarify facts and suggest solutions to tackle the rift between HKU president Xiang Zhang and council chairwoman Priscilla Wong Pui-sze.
According to the council resolution passed last Tuesday, Zhang must submit a progress report on his efforts to fill various senior positions. Two vice-president roles currently remain vacant and several other posts have only been filled under interim arrangements.
