Two-thirds of applicants get first choice of Hong Kong secondary school through central allocation system, Education Bureau says
- Primary pupils get results of central allocation system on Tuesday; register at secondary schools on Thursday and Friday
- Principals say increased number of cross-border mainland Chinese pupils and Top Talent Pass Scheme boosted numbers of children competing for places
Pupils will be told their results on Tuesday, but families who were disappointed might find it more difficult this year to directly approach their preferred schools – known as “door-knocking” – after the Education Bureau announced last week it would reduce the number of places available because of falling school rolls.
The bureau on Monday said 50,508 Primary Six children, 1,060 more than last year, joined the secondary school places allocation system for the coming academic year.
Pupils were allocated places at secondary schools in two stages.
Youngsters in the first group were granted school places based on discretionary factors, such as academic and interview performance. Pupils could apply directly to any two schools in this phase and the results were released in March.
