A video of a mystery man in construction worker garb playing a piano in a Hong Kong shopping mall is doing the rounds on the internet, with viewers awestruck at his talent and the juxtaposition.
The 52-second video posted in the Facebook group “Tseung Kwan O” shows the man in standard industry uniform playing a Christian hymn called Stream of Praise by a Taiwan gospel band of the same name.
The piano at the The Link-owned Sheung Tak Plaza, is etched with King of Kowloon graffiti and is for public use.
The video has garnered more than 12,000 likes since it was posted on the page on Tuesday evening. The user who posted it claimed the man had stopped by the piano during lunch to play two songs, including Pachelbel’s Canon in D.
Internet users said the man had “true musical talent” and “despite his hard outer image, was gentle at heart”, while others called him a “master in disguise” and “the real definition of a romantic”.


A spokeswoman for Link Asset Management, which runs the mall, said the piano was one of six musical instruments in its shopping malls under a campaign called “Play For Free”.
She said the aim of the campaign was to allow underprivileged residents, especially children, who could not afford to buy musical instruments to be able to play. They also collaborated with artists who decorated the pianos.
A mother of two said she takes her six-year-old daughter to different shopping malls to practice playing piano almost once a week.
“It is a good opportunity for my children to build up their self-confidence when practicing piano in public, and most importantly, it is free of charge,” she said.
But another mother said many people abuse the time limit.
“Even though there is a limit of 15 minutes, some go beyond that,” she said. “As a result, my son has to queue up for a long time and this is quite annoying.”
Many Lai, who works at a nearby restaurant, complained that some piano players cause a disturbance. “Sometimes there are kids fooling around during after-school hours and it can get a bit noisy. But in general, those who play well create a positive atmosphere.”
A woman who lives around the area says that she enjoyed watching talented children play when she stops for tea at nearby restaurants.
