Tributes poured in from across the city on Friday as a senior fireman who died fighting one of Hong Kong’s longest-burning fires ever was laid to rest, with full honours.
Dressed in dark clothes, top government officials and the city’s leaders congregated at ­Universal Funeral Parlour in Hung Hom to pay their last respects to Samuel Hui Chi-kit, the second fireman to die in the huge blaze in Ngau Tau Kok last month.
About 30 members of the ­public gathered at the funeral ­parlour’s entrance.
One of them was Ida Wong, who urged Hongkongers to look for the positives in the tragedy.
“Hui and his colleague gave their all to put out the blaze, and I think all of us should learn from their spirit and determination,” she said.

After an official ceremony, the hearse – a modified fire engine – made its way to Amoycan Industrial Centre, the site of the blaze, where Hui last answered the call of duty. More than 100 onlookers applauded as the motorcade passed through, while many ­others swept away tears.
The procession continued at Kwun Tong fire station, where Hui was last stationed. Officers rang the bell four times inside the ­station, symbolically relieving Hui of his duties.

The police band then led more than 100 firefighters, including director David Lai Man-hin, to give their salute.
The hearse’s last stop was Gallant Garden in Wo Hop Shek cemetery, where Hui was to be buried.
Hui’s widow Ng On-yee and their seven-year-old son Hui ­Pak-kiu broke down in tears as the coffin was slowly lowered into the ground along with his yellow ­firefighter’s helmet.

Hui’s death, aged 37, followed that of senior station officer Thomas Cheung, 30, killed on the fire’s first night. Cheung was buried at a plot near Hui’s on Sunday.
On June 23, the third day of the historic blaze, Hui’s colleagues pulled him unconscious from the building’s third floor as they were changing shifts.

He died at United Christian Hospital in nearby Kwun Tong the same evening.
The government awarded the duo posthumous gold medals for bravery, and gave cash sums in excess of HK$4 million to each of the firemen’s families in recognition of their sacrifice.
