Hong Kong’s star performers in the DSE exams eye familiar career paths in medicine, law and business
Some 68,128 students sat this year’s Diploma of Secondary Education examinations, with four attaining perfect scores
Three of four students attaining perfect scores in this year’s Diploma of Secondary Education exams have chosen to study medicine or dentistry at university, with one opting for law.
Their decisions continue a trend seen last year, when 10 out of 11 top scorers chose courses in medicine, law or business.
Fung Wai-wah, president of the Professional Teachers’ Union, said many Hongkongers saw professions in these fields as ensuring a stable future, a handsome income and social status, which was why they remained sought-after jobs among pupils and parents.
“The whole social atmosphere is like this, so it will be very hard to change it,” Fung said. “We should encourage pupils to follow their interests more in choosing subjects.”
Tammy Yiu Tsz-ching and Bernice Cheung Cheuk-sin, both from Diocesan Girls’ School in Jordan, obtained the highest scores this year, with 5** grades in all four core subjects and three elective subjects – the highest marks possible. Yiu said she wanted to pursue dentistry while Cheung was eyeing medicine.
