Drivers stage protest over Link Reit parking rent rise
Car drivers and motorbike riders, led by Sha Tin district councillors, staged a slow-drive protest on Saturday against an almost 10 per cent rise in the fees from May 1 for parking spaces owned by the Link Reit. About 30 protesters drove or rode slowly from Ma On Shan to the multi-storey car park building in Temple Mall South, where a Link Reit office is located. A petition was handed to Link Reit representatives demanding the decision be withdrawn and rents for spaces frozen for three years.

Items on government land removed after news report
Illegal structures on several plots of government land in Wang Chau, a rural area in the northwest of Yuen Long, have been removed after the Lands Department took action last month following earlier media coverage. Items occupying the sites have been taken away, fences erected around the areas, and car park signs removed. The plots had illegally been occupied by Tsang Shu-wo, chairman of the Ping Shan Rural Committee, for more than 20 years for the purpose of operating a car-parking business.

Pupils considered taking own lives due to exam pressure
Students studying for the Diploma of Secondary Education examinations were found to have suffered from insomnia, abdominal pain, nausea, stomach pain and other symptoms related to anxiety. The findings came after a recent poll by the Hok Yau Club found 14 per cent of students rated the pressure from the exams as unbearable. A 17-year-old student taking the exams was diagnosed with moderate depression after she overate and experienced suicidal thoughts.

‘Paper of death’ examination not so deadly this year
The number of pupils passing the so-called “paper of death” Chinese-language examination in this year’s DSE exams is expected to be higher because two of its sections – reading comprehension and writing – are considered less difficult than in the previous five years. The reading comprehension section consists of only two articles instead of the usual three.

Conservationists decry fireworks near mangrove
A man in his 30s has been accused of disrupting the ecology of a mangrove in the vicinity of the Little Egret Restaurant in Tai Po by staging a 40-foot-high, HK$60,000 fireworks show last Saturday while proposing to his girlfriend during a dinner there. His girlfriend said yes to the proposal, saying she was surprised by the touching scene.

Government departments face probe over waste hill
The Planning Department and the Environmental Protection Department will be investigated over possible negligence or dereliction of duty over a waste hill near Kingswood Villas in Tin Shui Wai. Lee Yuet-man, a Yuen Long district councillor, said he had received a notice from the Office of the Ombudsman which said investigations would be launched into the two departments and be completed in three to six months. Lee said he had complained many times about the waste hill since 2003 but the problem had never been dealt with until recently, when it was widely reported.
