CY Leung to head to belt and road summit with Hong Kong delegation in latest bid to get city on board China’s trade plan
Delegation will rub shoulders with more than 1,000 delegates and state leaders of 28 countries during talks on drive to open up trade along the old Silk Route
It marks the outgoing leader’s latest effort to get the city on board China’s drive to open up trade along the old Silk Route and facilitate integration across Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Leung is due to deliver a speech about financial connectivity during a panel discussion which will exchange views with senior officials from China’s Ministry of Finance, the People’s Bank of China, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, according to Yvonne Choi Ying-pik, commissioner for Hong Kong’s Belt and Road Office.
“[Leung’s speech] is a special arrangement on the back of Hong Kong’s position as a global financial centre,” she said.
The belt and road trade plan, initiated by Xi, was announced in 2013, aimed at boosting business via two trade corridors – the land-based Silk Road economic belt in the north, and the maritime Silk Road in the south.
